I'm learning Java in school. They expect us to work on Java at home, and give us a CD with JCreator Pro, but they assume everyone in the world uses Windows.
JCreator Pro doesn't run on the Mac. I have Mac OS X Tiger. I know it's supposed to have a Java compiler built in, but I can't get it to work. I expected that, being Apple software, it would be very simple to start up xcode, type in some Java code, and run it. But I can't get that program to do anything. Not even Applescript.
CodeWarrior Compiler for Mac works with the following file extensions Comparison table of actions that CodeWarrior Compiler for Mac can perform with each of its associated file type beta. This table might not contain all possible associated or supported file types or may contain incorrect data. These IDEs offer a variety of features, like: building Java applications, TestNG, debugging, code inspections, code assistance, JUNIT testing, multiple refactoring, visual GUI builder and code editor, Java, Maven build tools, ant, do data modelling and build queries, and more.
Is there somewhere that I could download a simple, easy-to-use Java IDE and compiler/interpreter? I need to be able to import javax.swing, since that's what we have to use for the GUI at school. Is it even possible to use that package on a Mac? If so, do I need to download extra stuff besides the compiler?
Click to expand.I guess I'm not sure what Applescript capability has to do with Java capability, given that the two are entirely unrelated languages. When you used XCode, did you create a new project? What kind of project? The project templates in XCode include (among others) a Java Swing applet and a Java Swing application option. If you're having trouble using these for some reason, you should be able to find help in one of the comp.sys.mac.programmer. newsgroups. Or you could try looking on XCode's 'Help' menu, under 'XCode help'.
The window that pops up leads pretty quickly to a Java 'getting started' document. I'm learning Java in school. Click to expand.Eclipse is an excellent cross-platform open-source java IDE, and for pure java program is likely to be more effective the xcode.
Eclipse runs well in osx for the most part, though I have seen it crash occasionally. See IDEA also runs in osx. In general it's even better than Eclipse, particularly the code analysis tools. But it's an expensive commercial product with so-so osx support at best, so I don't recommend it unless someone else buys it for you. It's also a resource hog and won't run well on anything less than a G5 with 2GB ram. By comparison, I've run Eclipse on a 1GHz 12' G4 laptop with 768MB.
For more on IDEA see: Of course learning an ide takes time. These are sophisticated, powerful tools. If the OP is still learning java and is just beginning to write simple programs, he's almost certainly better off using much simpler tools: a smart text editor like emacs or gvim, and Terminal. The value of ide's shows up with large, complicated programs.
